Cleopatra at the Mall | Short

Cleopatra at the Mall - Short film commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Cleopatra at The Mall (2024) reflects on the rediscovery of Black and Native American sculptor Edmonia Lewis’s monumental marble The Death of Cleopatra (1876). Born in 1844 in Greenbush, New York, Lewis moved to Europe in 1865 and settled in Rome in 1866, where she executed her extraordinary neoclassical sculpture. Although it had been exhibited in Philadelphia in 1876 and Chicago in 1878 to great acclaim, when Lewis died in London in 1907, The Death of Cleopatra was considered lost. In 1988 art historian Marilyn Richardson located the sculpture at a strip mall in Illinois; since 1994 it has been housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, in Washington, DC, near the National Mall.
